Leicester, 7 October 2025 – Accountants have no time to waste in getting their clients signed up for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, according to tax experts brought together by Mercia.
That was the clear warning on Mercia’s MTD: Getting Ready webinar that brought together HMRC with small business tax specialists.
Those with qualifying income over £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year will need to use MTD from next April. For the first phase of MTD for Income Tax the mandated income types are property (including foreign property) and self-employment for those not in a partnership.
MTD will introduce the need to keep digital records and file quarterly updates via third-party software. A final MTD return will be used instead of the current HMRC online return but the deadline for submission of the final return and the payment dates will stay the same.
Victoria Kelly, Managing Director at Mercia, said: ‘The message from HMRC and other tax experts at our event was clear: every qualifying client needs to be signed up now. Accounting practices leaving it until next year risk running out of time to onboard clients onto the MTD system.
‘Accountants only need to sign up clients once. While clients can sign up themselves, it is not recommended. The process is the same in the end, but the route is different – and that impacts how accountants manage their role as trusted advisors.’
