International Women’s Day with Caroline Hobden

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. However, the day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

IWD dates as far back as the beginning of the 19th century, and is recognised around the world. You can learn more about its history here.

We sat down with Accountex Portfolio Director, Caroline Hobden. Discover how she started her career, her advice to fellow women and what International Women’s Day means to her. 

How did you get into your career? 

I went to university with unwavering confidence to emerge as the next Vivienne Westwood or Coco Chanel. Within a few weeks, I was confronted with the harsh reality of my limited artistic ability. This posed as an obstacle in my career. Determined to succeed, I redirected my focus toward the business aspects of my degree. I soon discovered a natural aptitude for managing projects from inception to completion.  Following graduation and a brief stint in the fashion industry, I found myself yearning for a deeper connection in my work. An opportunity arose to join an event organising team, working on major trade shows. Once I stepped through that door, I was hooked.  

What does International Womens Day mean to you? 

IWD offers me an opportunity to contemplate my own journey of personal and professional growth. It’s crucial that we take time to promote, praise and elevate the incredible women in our lives and ensure they are receiving the support they need – everyday.  While we’ve made significant strides, the journey towards gender equality is far from over. 

What advice would you give young women starting out in their careers?  

To young women starting out in their careers, I would advise them to seek out mentorship and say yes to networking opportunities that come their way. Embrace challenges as potential for growth, remain adaptable to change, and never underestimate the value of learning. Trust in your capabilities, trust in your instincts and stay true to your values.
