How did you get into your current profession from being a Senior Investigating Officer for Avon and Somerset Police?
I was serving as the Bristol police Commander when I was introduced to a leadership and mentoring group called the Bath Footdown Fifteen. This was a group of CEOs and entrepreneurs who came together every month to support each other and have the conversations they couldn’t have anywhere else.
Having been in the group for a few years I was invited by the Chair to take over as CEO at Footdown. At that stage we were a leadership and mentoring company with a cool diagnostic that we used to help senior leaders surface the biggest issues in their business.
Over the years we transitioned into a pure consultancy and then about ten years ago realised we were a “data’ company.
I then found myself CEO of a software company, no one saw that coming! We re-branded as Tensense.ai, the passion was still to inspire leaders and organisations to be the best they could be…the purpose hadn’t changed, it was that we used data to make the difference.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
A prisoner once said to me, “a busy man has plenty of time, a lazy man has no time”, this has stayed with me ever since and I guess is why I follow the mantra, “the harder you work the luckier you get”
What do you see as key trends for the sector in the coming year?
The environment for all business leaders has become even more complex and challenging. Building and sustaining the right culture and environment for people and leaders to flourish is vital. It is our people who know what is really happening in the business, we must find ways to continually listen and hear from them.
What one person or business in the industry do you really admire and why?
I will be forever grateful to Paul Dickson and his team at Armstrong Watson, they looked at our data and took a chance a few years ago. We are now in our 4th year with them and under Paul’s leadership, Tensense.ai has become an integral part of their approach to managing performance and growth. The data helps them manage and predict performance. Our data needs leaders to be “curious” and ask great questions. Their CTO said, “you now help us predict profitability in two months time”
What’s the best part of your job?
Meeting and working with people who share the same values
