3 Minutes with Libby Walklett

Kicking off the first interview of the year is Libby Walklett, Founder of The Ethical Bookkeeper.

Libby is an award-winning Accountant with over 27 years’ experience in both industry and practice. Libby loves working closely with business owners and supporting them to resolve business challenges, holding them accountable, and occasionally asking difficult questions to help them meet their goals. Libby’s career has also lead her to sharing her knowledge, by teaching accountancy at Cirencester College to a wide range of ages and abilities.

How did you get into the profession?

The hospitality industry lost its sparkle, so I rolled up my sleeves, started with the basics and worked my way up.

What do you love most about the bookkeeping profession?

Supporting people in any way I can is the true joy of bookkeeping – I’m very happy to have most things thrown at me and just get on with it. More than anything, I love taking over from someone who’s messed the bookkeeping up, bringing it up to scratch, balancing everything and creating processes to streamline the work.

What is the one thing bookkeepers must do to adapt and remain successful?

Don’t let your professional body dictate your CPD – go above and beyond! The learning journey never ends, especially in this rapidly evolving industry, so lifelong learning is key to staying ahead of the curve.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the profession?

Lean on the wisdom of experienced mentors – they’re a wealth of knowledge and surprisingly generous with their time. Get qualified, but remember, experience is the other half of the equation. And don’t underestimate “soft skills” – strong communication and people skills are invaluable assets, and often harder to learn than the technical stuff.
